Optimization of a laser ion source for $^{163}$Ho isotope separation

2019

To measure the mass of the electron neutrino, the “Electron Capture in Holmium-163” (ECHo) collaboration aims at calorimetrically measuring the spectrum following electron capture in 163Ho. The success of the ECHo experiment depends critically on the radiochemical purity of the 163Ho sample, which is ion-implanted into the calorimeters. For this, a 30 kV high transmission magnetic mass separator equipped with a resonance ionization laser ion source is used. To meet the ECHo requirements, the ion source unit was optimized with respect to its thermal characteristics and material composition by means of the finite element method thermal-electric calculations and chemical equilibrium simulation…

The branching ratio of intercombination $A^1\Sigma^+\sim b^3\Pi\to a^3\Sigma^+/X^1\Sigma^+$ transitions in the RbCs molecule: measurements and calcul…

2020

We observed the $A^1\Sigma^+\sim b^3\Pi\to a^3\Sigma^+/X^1\Sigma^+$ laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectra of the RbCs molecule excited from the ground $X^1\Sigma^+$ state by the Ti:Sapphire laser. The LIF radiation from the common perturbed levels of the singlet-triplet $A\sim b$ complex was recorded by the Fourier-transform (FT) spectrometer with the instrumental resolution of 0.03~cm$^{-1}$. The relative intensity distribution in the rotationally resolved $A\sim b\to a^3\Sigma^+(v_a)/X^1\Sigma^+(v_X)$ progressions was measured, and their branching ratio was found to be about of 1$\div$5$ \times$10$^{-4}$ in the bound region of the $a^3\Sigma^+$ and $X^1\Sigma^+$ states. The experiment …

H-He collision-induced satellite in the Lyman alpha profile of DBA white dwarf stars

2020

The spectra of helium-dominated white dwarf stars with hydrogen in their atmosphere present a distinctive broad feature centered around 1160~\AA\/ in the blue wing of the Lyman-$\alpha$ line. It is extremely apparent in WD 1425+540 recently observed with HST COS. With new theoretical line profiles based on ab initio atomic interaction potentials we show that this feature is a signature of a collision-induced satellite due to an asymptotically forbidden transition. This quasi-molecular spectral satellite is crucial to understanding the asymmetrical shape of Lyman-$\alpha$ seen in this and other white dwarf spectra. Our previous work predicting this absorption feature was limited by molecular…

Nuclear anapole moment interaction in BaF from relativistic coupled-cluster theory

2018

We present high accuracy relativistic coupled cluster calculations of the P-odd interaction coefficient $W_A$ describing the nuclear anapole moment effect on the molecular electronic structure. The molecule under study, BaF, is considered a promising candidate for the measurement of the nuclear anapole moment, and the preparation for the experiment is now underway [Altunas et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 142501 (2018)]. Influence of various computational parameters (size of the basis set, treatment of relativistic effects, and treatment of electron correlation) on the calculated $W_A$ coefficient is investigated and a recommended value of 147.7 Hz with an estimated uncertainty of 1.5% is prop…

Polarization-Dependent Disappearance of a Resonance Signal -- Indication for Optical Pumping in a Storage Ring?

2021

We report on laser spectroscopic measurements on Li$^+$ ions in the experimental storage ring ESR at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research. Driving the $2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{3}{2}) \,\leftrightarrow\,2p\,^3\!P_2\;(F=\frac{5}{2}) \leftrightarrow 2s\,^3\!{S}_1\;(F=\frac{5}{2})$ $\Lambda$-transition in $^7$Li$^+$ with two superimposed laser beams it was found that the use of circularly polarized light leads to a disappearance of the resonance structure in the fluorescence signal. This can be explained by optical pumping into a dark state of polarized ions. We present a detailed theoretical analysis of this process that supports the interpretation of optical pumping and demonstrate…

Highly efficient isotope separation and ion implantation of  163Ho for the ECHo project

2019

Abstract The effective electron neutrino mass measurement in the framework of the ECHo experiment requires radiochemically pure 163 Ho, which is ion implanted into detector absorbers. To meet the project specifications in efficiency and purity, the entire process chain of ionization, isotope separation , and implantation of 163Ho was optimized. A new two-step resonant laser ionization scheme was established at the 30 kV magnetic mass separator RISIKO. For ionization and separation, an average efficiency of 69 ( 5 )  stat(4)sys% was achieved using intra-cavity frequency doubled Ti:sapphire lasers. The implantation of undesired 166 m Ho, which is present in trace amounts in the initial  163Ho…

Ultracold Rare-Earth Magnetic Atoms with an Electric Dipole Moment

2018

We propose a new method to produce an electric and magnetic dipolar gas of ultracold dysprosium atoms. The pair of nearly degenerate energy levels of opposite parity, at 17513.33 cm$^{-1}$ with electronic angular momentum $J=10$, and at 17514.50 cm$^{-1}$ with $J=9$, can be mixed with an external electric field, thus inducing an electric dipole moment in the laboratory frame. For field amplitudes relevant to current-day experiments, we predict a magnetic dipole moment up to 13 Bohr magnetons, and an electric dipole moment up to 0.22 Debye, which is similar to the values obtained for alkali-metal diatomics. When a magnetic field is present, we show that the electric dipole moment is strongly…

Experimental verification of position-dependent angular-momentum selection rules for absorption of twisted light by a bound electron

2018

We analyze the multipole excitation of atoms with twisted light, i.e., by a vortex light field that carries orbital angular momentum. A single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion serves as a localized and positioned probe of the exciting field. We drive the $S_{1/2} \to D_{5/2}$ transition and observe the relative strengths of different transitions, depending on the ion's transversal position with respect to the center of the vortex light field. On the other hand, transition amplitudes are calculated for a twisted light field in form of a Bessel beam, a Bessel-Gauss and a Gauss-Laguerre mode. Analyzing experimental obtained transition amplitudes we find agreement with the theoretical predictions at a…

Production and detection of atomic hexadecapole at Earth's magnetic field

2007

Anisotropy of atomic states is characterized by population differences and coherences between Zeeman sublevels. It can be efficiently created and probed via resonant interactions with light, the technique which is at the heart of modern atomic clocks and magnetometers. Recently, nonlinear magneto-optical techniques have been developed for selective production and detection of higher polarization moments, hexadecapole and hexacontatetrapole, in the ground states of the alkali atoms. Extension of these techniques into the range of geomagnetic fields is important for practical applications. This is because hexadecapole polarization corresponding to the $\Delta M=4$ Zeeman coherence, with maxim…

Ferromagnetic gyroscopes for tests of fundamental physics

2020

A ferromagnetic gyroscope (FG) is a ferromagnet whose angular momentum is dominated by electron spin polarization and that will precess under the action of an external torque, such as that due to a magnetic field. Here we model and analyze FG dynamics and sensitivity, focusing on practical schemes for experimental realization. In the case of a freely floating FG, we model the transition from dynamics dominated by libration in relatively high externally applied magnetic fields, to those dominated by precession at relatively low applied fields. Measurement of the libration frequency enables in situ measurement of the magnetic field and a technique to reduce the field below the threshold for w…
